Another “Rocks & Surf” painting. I like this subject because it allows me to push my brush strokes within forms that are free-flowing (water) and solid (rocks). Also, like painting clouds, it’s easy to move things around for the sake of composition without having to worry about perspective, size, etc.
More rocks & surf
I see so much majesty in the waves . Each brush stroke represents each turn of the surf. The way you captured the cool, foamy froth of the water is so beautifully seen.
I really love your work and view it to teach myself how to be more brave.
And see better.
Love the bold brush work Ed. The strong colour and simplicity of composition work wonderfully in this piece. This would be great in a large format as well.

Great job on the surf – you really captured the momentum of the wave. Did you do this one in the studio?
Yes, this was done in the studio. I think it’s very true that after years of painting plein air, it’s much easier to capture that same life state in the studio.
Nice piece Ed. Love the cool blues and action in this one.
I think you are on to something with this kind of painting, Ed. There is so much vitality and energy in the strokes and in your color choices. This piece is positively stimulating!
Way to go!
There is so much energy in those waves – beautiful!!
Thanks Kate and Mike, that’s just what I was going for. The energy in breaking waves makes such a great subject to learn loose brushwork.
Ed, I really love this one.. FanTaStiCK! You’ve really got such an immediate feel with the brushwork and especially the colour.. very nice! The very colourful hit of greenish colour in the forground shadow surf are a treat.
Amazing energy in this painting. i love it. Bravo!!
